Northland Inc’s Te Tai Tokerau business ideas competition, The Pick, returns in 2022 after a two-year hiatus.
Delivered in partnership with The Orchard Business & Events Hub, Creative HQ and Callaghan Innovation, The Pick ’22 encourages people who have a business idea, or who wish to have a business idea, to test and develop it by a business model.
Supported by regional business experts throughout a ten-week program, attendees will explore and refine their ideas. With workshops conducted online or in person, the finalists will then be selected to present their concepts at a Pitch Night in front of a panel of Te Tai Tokerau business leaders. The big winner will receive a tailor-made business support package to help them develop their business idea.
Northland Inc’s business innovation and growth team leader Sophie Wiltshier says the quality of business ideas received in previous years shows the value of early stage support programs like The Pick.
“The Pick enables innovative thinkers at Te Tai Tokerau to develop their business ideas with the support of regional business experts and a network of like-minded entrepreneurs. The Pitch Night has seen exceptional business ideas showcased in previous years, many of which went on to launch successful businesses as part of The Pick competition.
Pick: 19 winner Jade Kake used her experience to create a solid platform from which to grow her business, Matakohe Architecture + Urbanism. Now a premier Maori kaupapa design studio located in Whangārei, Kake says she found The Pick workshops to be invaluable.
“The big advantage has been the orientation to create a business plan. I always go back to my grades when I write for the company or develop areas of strategy, I am surprised at the relevance of certain content, ”she says.
With The Pick ’22 entries open until February 2, 2022, the competition comes in handy for those who are brainstorming an idea or looking for new direction for the New Year, Wiltshier says.
“Northland Inc has a dedicated five year plan for our Te Tai Tokerau contractors, The Pick is Northland’s key program. It’s so exciting to see The Pick Business Ideas Competition return for 2022, it suits the innovators, creators and entrepreneurs of Tai Tokerau who have an idea and are ready to win the chance to make it happen.
Pick ’22 will take place from February 16, 2022, with weekly workshops for 10 weeks before the finalist’s Pitch Night. Registration for The Pick ’22 ends February 2, 2022.
