Plum School District business manager John Zahorchak leaves for new job in July

The Plum School District’s chief financial officer will take on a new job this summer.

John Zahorchak announced at the May 25 school board meeting that he will leave his administrative position to become a financial advisor in another community.

He declined to give further details about his next job. His last day in Plum is scheduled for July 19.

“I will always think of my time here in Plum with great fondness,” Zahorchak said after the reunion. “It was hard work, but it was rewarding work.”

Zahorchak, 43, said he plans to stay in the borough with his family.

“I will always be a taxpayer and I will always have two children in the school district,” he said.

After the announcement, the school board and superintendent Brendan Hyland spoke about Zahorchak’s time with the district.

“John has been a huge part of the success we’ve had over the past four years,” Hyland said. “Sometimes the CFO isn’t the most popular person in the world and sometimes has to deliver messages that are hard to hear, but necessary. John did it with class.

Everyone was excited about Zahorchak’s future and sad to see a professional colleague leave.

“He’s been extremely helpful in setting our goals for the future, saving us money at the moment and really setting the financial, tax direction with our people,” said board vice chairman Mike Caliguiri. “It cannot be underestimated. We wish you good luck. We look forward to following your career and hopefully continuing to work with and alongside you in your future endeavours.

Joe Tommarello, Board Member and Chairman of Finance, echoed those sentiments.

“I’m very sad to lose him and his skills and everything he brought to Plum,” Tommarello said. “Plum was facing multi-million dollar deficits in 2015 and 2016, and he was able to turn that around.”

Tommarello said he expects the position to be posted very soon and someone to be hired before mid-July so Zahorchak can help with the transition.

Zahorchak was hired by the district as director of business affairs with a pro-rated salary of $98,000 in August 2016. His last salary in the district is $125,000.

Zahorchak moved to the borough of Johnstown and served as business manager for the Greater Johnstown School District from 2012 to mid-2016. He earned degrees in human resource management from Indiana University in Pennsylvania and is an active member of the Pennsylvania Association of School Business Officials.
