Below are job descriptions for editor and business manager positions at Montana Kaimin, the independent student newspaper at the University of Montana. EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

Montana Editor-in-Chief Kaimin sets the tone, standards, and strategic vision for the University of Montana’s independent student media. The publisher manages the content creation staff for web and print products. The editor works closely with the business manager to develop and adhere to a budget, and to develop outreach and marketing strategies. The publisher represents Montana Kaimin as an organization to the public. This job is a significant commitment that requires journalism experience, excellent communication and problem-solving skills, and a keen interest in contemporary media practices and challenges.

Tasks:

  1. Be the face of the Kaimin: Respond to emails, call requests, and Slack messages, both internally and externally.
  2. Communicate with University stakeholders including Deans, President, Faculty, ASUM.
  3. Lead staff in the production and creation of editorial content, ensuring content is relevant and important to the community and readership Kaimin serves.
  4. Define and maintain editorial policy, including Kaimin’s presence on social networks.
  5. Serve as editor, engage in hands-on editing.
  6. Manage editorial staff including payroll, structure, disputes, hiring/firing.
  7. Commit to following the code of ethics defined by the Society for Professional Journalists.
  8. Commit to diversity, encouraging students of all races and backgrounds to contribute to Kaimin.
  9. Serve on the ASUM Publications Board. Must attend meetings, communicate with other board members and ASUM.
  10. Manage editorial IT infrastructure.
  11. Conduct staff meetings.
  12. Keep the faculty advisor and business manager informed.
  13. Keep track of the budget.

Minimum skills required:

* Equivalent to two semesters of experience as a journalist in a campus publication

ENTREPRENEUR

Montana Business Manager Kaimin leads the business office and independent student media marketing efforts at the University of Montana. The Business Manager creates and manages the budget, oversees business office employees/advertising representatives, and is responsible for online and print advertising and marketing opportunities and materials. The Commercial Director works closely with the Editor-in-Chief to implement Kaimin’s strategic and financial goals. This person also manages invoices, accounts receivable and payroll and oversees employee hiring practices, often working with the ASUM accountant to accomplish these tasks. This job is a significant commitment that requires excellent communication and problem-solving skills and a keen interest in contemporary advertising and business practices and challenges.

Tasks:

  1. Be the business voice of Montana Kaimin: Respond to emails, call requests, and Slack messages, both internally and externally.
  2. Communicate on budgetary and financial matters with University stakeholders, including the Faculty Advisor and ASUM.
  3. Oversee all revenue streams that support Montana Kaimin, including tuition, advertising sales, merchandise, and other revenue streams.
  4. Hire and direct advertising and business staff.
  5. Lead staff in the creation of advertising content.
  6. Define and maintain advertising and marketing policy and practices, including design, quality assurance, use of social media, ethical advertising policies, etc.
  7. Vision: Should create/update a strategic business plan for the Kaimin and help the organization achieve it.
  8. Serving on the ASUM Publications Board: attending meetings, communicating with other board members and ASUM.
  9. Manage the company’s IT infrastructure: develop a technology policy and delegate training in the use of applications.
  10. Facilitate company personnel bonding and team building.
  11. Direct and manage the distribution of newsprint copies of the Kaimin.
  12. Lead company staff meetings and attend regular all-staff meetings and events.
  13. Stick to the Kaimin budget and inform stakeholders accordingly.

Minimum skills required:

* Demonstrated knowledge and experience of business or project management. Experience with Canva or Adobe Spark strongly encouraged.
