How to Use the Internet to Improve Your Communication and Business Goals

By Danze Edwin

The latest social media statistics shared by Next Com, a digital and communications agency, show that there are 4.2 billion active social media users worldwide, and that number increased by 490 million between January 2020 and January 2021.

This is equivalent to 13.2% of the current world population.

What’s your part in this social pie?

Uganda has 3.4 million active users with an annual growth of 900,000 users.

Some key drivers of Internet growth

The pandemic; with lockdowns and quarantines happening across the world, there has been a huge shift in setting up online accounts for school, learning new skills.

People watched more than they read. Video content consumption has reached an all-time high with over 60% of video content consumed over text or image.

But how did they read?

They read while listening! Listen to podcasts and audiobooks. Most had to learn new skills in a very short time as some lost their jobs and had to train to survive in this ever-changing world.

YouTube ‘how-to’ videos and kids’ entertainment content, Tiktok challenges and Instagram reels have rocked into views.

Social networks have grown exponentially and yet they haven’t even reached their peak of popularity! There is no denying that social media platforms are now a major source of news and information. Locally, news portals are the most followed and this is also reflected in personal accounts which provide news updates.

NOTE: People WANT TO BE INFORMED as much as they want to be entertained. So how about “educating” them?

The question remains however Is it worth investing in social media when starting your business?

Brands and individuals need to know where the customer is FIRST first.

Ultimately, these are the end users for whom you tailor the information, products and services. They decide your business strategy and knowing their consumer behavior is a gateway to an effective communication strategy and product campaigns.
