Business manager

Ex-city superintendent takes job as business manager

ELLSWORTH – Dan Higgins, who stepped down as superintendent of city schools on Dec. 14, 2021, now works for the Mt. Blue Regional School District. He had notified the Ellsworth School Board of his resignation on December 13.

Higgins began his position as business manager for the district of 2,300 students on Jan. 31, Superintendent Chris Elkington confirmed. Elkington is a former Deer Isle-Stonington CSD 13 Superintendent who left in July 2021 to take up the Mt. Blue position.

“In January, our business manager plans changed and I tried to see if Dan wanted a different challenge,” Elkington said. “Dan said based on the family’s current needs, he would consider the opportunity with his wife. The rest is history.

In his letter of resignation from Ellsworth Schools, Higgins had cited the need to “focus on personal and family health, well-being and medical issues which require my immediate attention”.

“While my resignation was necessary to allow me time to immediately focus on personal and family health, well-being and medical issues, the intent was for me to return to work at some point in the future,” Higgins told The American. “At the time, we didn’t know when it might happen. Lucky for [wife] Tammi and I, our family situation had improved to the point where it made sense for us to consider a suitable opportunity if an opportunity presented itself.

As Hancock County superintendents, Higgins and Elkington had worked together and had a “positive and professional relationship,” Higgins said. He added that Elkington is someone “with whom I share similar philosophies and beliefs about education”.

Higgins has no plans to move to the Farmington area, he noted, and also reiterated that leaving his role at Ellsworth was the right move for his family.

Elkington said Mt. Blue is “blessed” to have Higgins on board.

“Dan Higgins brings an in-depth knowledge of Maine finance, budgeting, education and financial law that you won’t find in many candidates… The loss of Ellsworth brought RSU 9 [Mt. Blue Regional School District] an intelligent, hardworking and caring leader whom I learned a great deal from working with him and others in Hancock County.
