As an entrepreneur, setting goals for yourself is essential to achieving the results you desire. However, women often put so much pressure on themselves to achieve a certain milestone or measure in the form of a goal that the goals can sometimes be counterproductive. Let me explain.
Goals can inadvertently make us feel like failure. Either we hit $ 10,000 a month or we didn’t. Traditional goal setting often plays into the black / white mindset that is so pervasive in our society. These types of goals don’t leave much room for all the beautiful colors in between where we may not have achieved the exact goal we wanted but we did in other ways. For example, you might not have hit your goal of $ 10,000 this month, but you had 20 meetings with prospects that could earn you $ 30,000 next month. Blaming yourself for not meeting your original goal of $ 10,000 could prevent you from celebrating the 20 lead meetings you worked hard for, which could even generate more income in the long run.
Intentions, on the other hand, are less based on shame and offer more opportunities to feel a sense of accomplishment. Or as I like to say, they leave more room for magic. Those little surprises that help us generate income or increase our influence in unexpected ways. For example, you might have the goal of “booking 5 clients this month” when in reality what you want is to make money in a way that you feel is energizing and aligned. Maybe booking 5 clients will feel energized and aligned, but maybe there will be an opportunity to speak for the same amount that would be even more energizing and aligned. You don’t want to be so focused on booking your 5 clients that you 1) book clients who are not aligned and suck your life or 2) miss this amazing opportunity to speak. It is a practice of letting go of the outcome and believing in the endless possibilities that are available to us at any given time.
Intentions not only offer a more compassionate way of setting goals, but there have been studies that look at psi (a general way of describing the types of communication or information transfer that challenge the common understanding of time and space), which suggest that conscious intention (e.g. thoughts and feelings) influences unconscious activity. In fact, our eyes receive and process 10 million bits of information per second, but we only consciously interact with 16 of them. This means that we only know a fraction of the information that is at hand. Part of our job is learning to expand our awareness through practices like meditation. The other part is just believing that there is more than it seems.
Here are 6 ways to use the definition of intentions to elevate your business goals:
1. Create a vision board for your business
Vision boards are all the rage these days and there is a reason for it. Have you ever considered creating a vision board especially for your business? It can be a fun way to find out what you want your business to look and feel like and where you want to focus your attention. Especially if you’ve got yourself too much of a brain, spending time reconnecting with your bigger mission through imagery can be incredibly rewarding. Let your imagination run wild.
2. Plan a monthly intention-setting party
It can be fun to get together with your fellow bosses once a month and share your intentions with each other. You may ask yourself questions such as: Where do you want to focus your energy? What was your biggest learning from the past month? What do you hope to celebrate at the end of this month?
3. Describe your ideal day as a CEO
As an entrepreneur, it’s important to be clear about what your ideal day as a CEO would look like. Otherwise, we can drift away from our larger outlook on life and business by spending our days answering low priority emails, scheduling meetings over meals, and falling back into old workaholic routines. . Building your own schedule is one of the biggest perks of being an entrepreneur, so take the time to make it happen. Ask yourself the question: how many hours do I want to work each day? What would my dream mornings be like? How often do I want to train each week? When am I most productive? How important is it to take care of yourself on a daily basis?
4. Choose a word of the week
Establishing an intention doesn’t have to be overwhelming. It can be as simple as choosing a word of the week like “confidence”, “focus”, “confidence”, “joy”, “visibility” or “play”. It’s a great way to stay committed to an intention without having to do anything overly elaborate. Try writing your note in your journal, putting it on a sticky note on your computer, or creating a calendar reminder for you to see every day.
5. Claim your super power
In the midst of trying to achieve goals, it’s easy to focus on what you lack and forget how amazing you are. Take the time to remember what you’re really good at. What is your super power? Does he navigate difficult conversations? Does it make people see something differently? Is your intuition strong? Is your coding skills? In the fast paced entrepreneurial life, don’t forget to celebrate all the ways you shine.
6. See yourself in 5 years
Taking a step back to imagine where you would like to be in 5 years can be a powerful exercise. It’s not about knowing all the answers, but about tapping into the essence of your big dreams. We can get so wrapped up in the day-to-day activities of running a business that we lose sight of where we want to go. Take a moment to close your eyes and imagine yourself 5 years from then. Where are you? What are you doing? What impact are you making? Who is around you? How do you feel? What wisdom does your future me want your young me to know?
